Gabriel_Capture_ThumbA full crowd was on hand for the announcement of the Community Glossary Link Permaculture Design Open's "Best Design" submission during the 2011 Upstate NY Permaculture Gathering in Rochester on Saturday April 9.  Five complete entries were received in trying to tackle this year's design problem of creating an edible forest snack garden at the Rahma free health clinic at 3100 South Salina St in Syracuse, NY.  The Best Design was selected by a blind jury panel (based upon criteria presented in the Design open Announcement) and belonged to:

Best Design: Steve Gabriel, Works With Nature Design
Steve's design showed a great understanding of the concepts behind Permaculture and the intricacies of multi-story systems and guilds.  It was well developed and full of depth while not being overly complex, with fairly realistic budgets and labor requirements.  The traditional components of the berry patches and the annual beds will function to lead people into the forest garden through more recognizable patterns of gardening.  Click here to download the full presentation which consists of four panels to learn more about the overall design and concept.

First Honorable Mention: Meagan Lynch, Rising Roots Design
Meagan's design was also well versed in Permaculture design principles and showed a complete and well thought out plan for implementation through accompanying documentation.  The creativity of playing off of Alchemical's logo for the garden layout brought a smile to the judge's faces.  Click here to download a copy of the graphic panel file and click to download a copy of the implementation plan and the plant list.

Second Honorable Mention: Justin Heavey
Justin's entry was appreciated for its simplicity and reliance on recognizable and locally available components and species.  Click here to download a full sized copy.
