[Apr 2~ rain barrels]  w/ Sasha Batorsky.  To be held at 717 Otisco Street from 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm . This demonstration workshop will cover creation, installation and maintenance.  During the workshop  a local artist will be demonstrating painting a rain barrel, there will be light refreshments and a raffle!  One Rain Barrel Will be raffled off! [Apr 16 ~ build an herb spiral]  w/ Valerie Dawnstar.  To be held at 717 Otisco St, Syracuse, NY from 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm.  Objective:  participants in workshop will be instructed in the construction of an herb spiral using permaculture principles.  Observe and interact - Where would be the optimum siting for an herb spiral, taking into consideration of sun, wind, rain, soil, infrastructures, etc.  Catch and store energy - collecting the energy of the sun - exposure, warmth - rocks as heat sinks, rain - contours to collect rainfall & gardeners - convenient to attention and harvest, choose perennials.  Design from patterns to details - basic form of circle or ellipse with a spiral.  Use edges &  value the marginal - spiral shape creates maximum interfaces for productivity.  Participants are asked to RSVP by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. [Apr 23 ~ herbal medicine making]  w/ Nick Cavanaugh and Adrienne Allen.  To be held at 106 Greenwood Place, Syracuse, NY from 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm.We will be teaching participants how to prepare medicinal herbs at home.  We won’t teach much about what herbs are good for what, but how to make things with herbs, in general.  Specifically, we’ll cover creating infusions, decoctions, tinctures, honeys, oils and salves from fresh or dried herbs.  We will be making sample products hands-on in class to the extent possible, with audience participation.  Since most products take a long time to create, however, we will also bring already made products to display.  Participants are asked to RSVP by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. [Apr 30 ~ perennial permaculture planting]  w/ Dorothy Goodman and Frank Cetera.  To be held at 717 Otisco St, Syracuse, NY from 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm.  Learn the process that goes into designing a perennial edible landscape design for the front yard of an urban lot.  What considerations should you make when designing an entryway based upon how the lot will be used, and the environmental and space constraints present.  Participate in preparation and planting of perennial species that will form the foundation of this miniature forest garden system.  Participants are asked to RSVP by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. [May 7 ~ build with earth]
The Build With Earth workshop scheduled for Saturday May 7 has been POSTPONED, and will be rescheduled at a later date.  Delays in the site’s construction schedule, materials acquisition, and weather patterns is forcing the move to a date later in the year.  To be placed on the registration list to be notified directly when the new date is chosen, please send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. w/ Lindsay Speer and Frank Cetera.  To be held at 717 Otisco St, Syracuse, NY from 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm.  Learn about cob as a building material.  What goes into cob, how to obatin the raw materials, and what can you do with it.  Participate in mixing a batch of cob and installing it as a part of an urban natural house renovation.  Possible projects (depending on site progress) include an earthen floor, wall insulation, and a thermal mass wall or bench.  Participants are asked to RSVP by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. [june 11 ~ the work that reconnects] w/ Cindy Squillace.  To be held at Elmwood Park (Meet at the Glenwood Ave entrance), Syracuse, NY from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm.  The Work That Reconnects (WTR) Workshop will help affirm and empower people to move beyond our disconnected industrial growth society toward a life sustaining one.  Based on the work of Joanna Macy, we will use practical, experiential exercises to share concerns, inspire each other and strengthen our commitment and connection to all life.  The workshop will be organized into 4 segments  1) Gratitude   2) Owning and honoring pain for our world  3)Shifting our lens  4)Going forth with new eyes. Hopefully this workshop will be held outdoors so people should dress for the weather. Participants will receive a list of WTR resources.  Cindy Squillace is a long time Syracuse activist, grief counselor and educator who has been studying The Work That Reconnects with Joanna Macy for the past 7 years, including a 30 day program in Australia.  Participants are asked to RSVP by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
