This is the first in a series of posts highlighting the great work being done by the projects within Alchemical's
Quinta Essentia
Fiscal Sponsorship program.
Skitching is the act of clinging onto a vehicle, using its momentum and energy to get somewhere at low to no expense. At Skitching Press, we do just that. The embodiment of energy in information within news media is kept in circulation, allowing it additional exposure for absorption by the public before it disappears beneath headlines and into archives.

One could view Skitching Press as the vehicle, pulling the article along a little further, or as the free rider, encouraging others to skitch on the informational and social vehicles. This technique is not only applied through the daily posts on our blog, but through the distribution of audio CDs intended to engage an unknowing recipient through thought-provoking analysis and discussion of current economic and ecologic woes. It is a method antithetical to "preaching to the choir".
The co-founder and editor, Ian "irkone" Kirby, became involved in the social awareness movement through similar unexpected means. His introduction to the movement came at a function he attended shortly after graduating college and secretly turning down a job at a local newspaper. Several copies of Arthur magazine were handed out to attendees. After noticing a copy laying on the ground, discarded, Ian took the magazine home, browsed through it a week later, and read an interview which sparked his quest to uncovering the truth of reality. Nearly three years later, he connected with Frank Cetera of The
Alchemical Nursery Project (ANP) at a
Permaculture Design Certificate course (PDC) at the Hancock Permaculture Center in Hancock, NY. There, they refined the visions and goals of a media outlet and conceived the title "Skitching Press" with help from a fellow student, Deb. ANP's fiscal sponsorship of Skitching Press, including the audio CD distribution project Ian had already undertaken on his own, has resulted in hundreds more CD's in circulation and blog hits.
The reluctance of dinosaurs to abandon their ancient perceptions of the world has inclined Skitching Press to target a younger crowd, primarily college students. The vast, highly interconnected social networks of universities, their limitless resource accessibility, and shared mission statement to learn, question, experiment and participate amount to a sizzling caldron of potential. Information and group solidarity need to spread like mushroom spores. Skitching Press is a facilitator in the progression towards achieving a critical mass, and is finely tuned to society's stage of awareness.
