The world of non-profits has been taken by storm through the latest flush of emerging technologies and uses related to cellphones and SMS text capabilities. Cause mobilization, fundraising, data acquisition and news updates are just a few of the uses for mobile cell tech that can benefit non-profits.
Alchemical has just instituted a new Textmarks SMS subscription service that our members can sign up for to receive our latest event updates as they are unfolding. Other people, who are not yet affiliated with Alchemical as members and who want to learn more, can send a text message to our service to receive information about our organization. Just send a text to 41411 with the word ALCHEMICAL in the message field. You will be subscribed to our updates and will receive relevant information about events that is timely and remindful if you haven't checked our webpage lately.
For instance, When The International Social Justice Film Festival featuring the Trash Art Auction opens its doors in May, Alchemical will send out a text update reminding subscribers of the event dates, times, and other important info.
Alchemical will also be developing a mobile app (that's an application) using the Textmarks API
so users can find eco-villages and
Permaculture centers from their cell
phones when they are traveling. Anyone with coding experience who
would like to help out would be appreciated.

One of the frontrunners in helping bring this technology to non-profits is MobileActive which bills itself as "A resource for activists using mobile technology worldwide". I highly recommend visiting the site, signing up for their newsletter, or joining the Google Group. Visitors can learn all about mobile apps that are available, list their own apps, or collaborate with others on new apps.
Another great site is TechSoup , which covers all kinds of tech as it relates to non-profits and not just mobile tech. TechSoup has a community forum for getting questions answered, as well as daily news onsite and through email subscription. Right now, TechSoup is hosting an online seminar for "Mobile Technology for Advocacy & Activism ", sign up now to participate.
Mobile tech is sure to create more waves in the future, and we plan on featuring mobile tech as a part of our Winter 2009 IT Permie conference. Please consider joining us to plan the conference, help code mobile apps, or just sign up for our http://www.textmarks.com/ALCHEMICAL mobile text updates service.
