Registration for the Zero Waste Initiative of the 40 Below Summit On Saturday October 18th is now available at the Event Registration Page .
Aside from participating in our monthly meetings, we always need help with the various events and activities we are helping to plan in the city.
One that's coming up soon, on October 18, is the 40 Below Summit. This is a city-wide event, and will be an exciting day highlighting various organizations and initiatives in Syracuse. 40 Below extends the invitation to all in the city, especially the younger generations, to learn how "it's all here."
The
Alchemical Nursery Project is helping to plan two initiatives for this day:
1) Tree planting - a hands-on activity. We are looking for volunteers to help procure tools, and trees/shrubs for the activity, plus volunteers who have any experience with plantings to help the day of the event.
2) The Zero Waste Mafia - alright maybe mafia is a strong word - we persuade with a smile and some useful information as opposed to a gun to the head...
We're looking for volunteers to help man that various stations set up around the city for the day's events.
According to the size of each site location (5 altogether, in addition to after party event), we will have either one or two stations, which will include the following:
A garbage can: for landfill waste. If somebody brought a granola bar with them, and needs to throw out the wrapper, this can is where it would go.
A recycling bin: for all recyclable bottles, cans from beverages, etc.
A
compost bin: for all food waste and the compostable products (paper/corn starch) they’re served on/in
Each station will have signage designating each bin, with some examples of materials that would go in each. Each station will require a volunteer to man it, to tell people where to put their trash to avoid cross contamination. They can also answer any questions people may have about composting and the zero waste initiative in general.
We are planning on setting up our stations next to existing trash cans in the city if they are in the vicinity of the day’s scheduled programming activities, to redirect potentially compostable or recyclable materials from the city trash cans in the area of the event.
3) Do you know how to screenprint or make patches? We are looking for volunteers who may be able to reproduce the Alchemical Nursery logo (black version) on patches or directly onto t-shirts. We plan on going to the Salvation Army to buy up second hand cotton t-shirts to make our ANP crew t-shirts. This should be fun! We can use these for the 40 Below Summit volunteers, and we can also sell these at future tabling events!
If you are interested in participating in any way, please contact Liz with you interests!
