Urban Homestead at the Inner Harbor
Alas, Kennedy Square is going to be developed as housing for Upstate employees. Its a good thing for them to live near their job. Still its a shame that it is probably not going to be a mixed development like planned. Upstate is also developing harrison towers and another spot nearby. I don't know the total acreage, but it must be close to 30. Hopefully we will get a good Community Benefit Agreement out of it, apparently they are negotiating that behind closed doors.
None the less, I am not going to give up the dream of a
permaculture community development. Other opportunities are sure to arise, and we must be ready for them. I have spoken to many people who have similar dreams. We have to get together and refine our vision. We have to get capital or credit. We have to find builders that can make it happen. Perhaps we have to form (not another one!) an organization: "The Permaculture Community Development Corporation," or something.
My latest fantasy spot is the inner harbor. There is a lot of space there going up for mixed use development. I think the argument could be made for turning it into an example of people living in harmony with the earth. It is after all the sacred site of the peace maker and should belong to those who could take care of it. It is land in great need of healing. Once again I call you dreamers (I know who you are) to get in touch with me and help me refine this vision. If we don't succeed on this spot there will be another and perhaps by then we will be better prepared to make it happen.
