2012 Westcott Neighborhood Bulb Give Away Report

Sat. Oct. 6, the 10th anniversary of the Westcott Neighborhood Bulb Give Away day, was cold and wet. Usually we are out  in the parking lot but due to the elements this year we were all indoors

In spite of  nasty weather close to 275 people showed up to pick up bags of 18 daffodil bulbs. It was great to see so many familiar faces.

We gave away close  to 5,000 daffodils, raised over $200 for the WCC Kid's Club through their bake and pumpkin sale, sold $200 dollars of raffle tickets and handed out hundreds of city wide bicycle maps courtesy of the Syracuse Metropolitan Transportation Council.

Olan Mack, new Exec. Dir.  of the Westcott  Community Center, attended his first Bulb Give Away day. He said, " My initial expression was WOW!”   Although overcast  for much of the day, the community support of the event was spectacular.  A broad and diverse populous continued to stream into the Center to receive bulbs during the entire event, even during periods of rain.

Thanks to the Bulb Project Committee for all that you do in coordinating this event and hosting it at the Westcott Community Center.

Kristinia Starowitz Facebooked us and said "Thanks for a great event yesterday! The "Westcott Neighborhood Bulb Give Away" inspired us to have a "Bulb Brunch" with friends! We all came down to the WCC together for bulbs and checked out all the info. (We loved the Devine Gardens educational table on composting). Then we all went back to our house to share a delicious brunch and talk about our garden plans. In the spirit of the occasion we made some tulip bulb packages for our friends to take home as well. Thanks so much for all your hard work with this project and inspiring us to do something fun together this weekend!"

The film END:CIV  hosted by Glossary Link Alchemical Nursery was attended by 35 people.
Frank Raymond Cetera, staff at The Alchemical Nursery said, "The film seemed to inspire a number of the attendees based upon our conversations afterwards, at which about 20 people stayed to converse with the five panelists during the session titled "Reflections on Resisting the Destruction of the Earth."

Video of the discussion is available at the Alchemical Nursery's YouTube channel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYDx8jmajzQ. Photos of the event are online at our Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/AlchemicalNursery.

A special thanks to organizations who distributed literature: Save the Rain, Slow Food of CNY, The Red House,  Cornell Cooperative Extension,  Devine Gardens,  Syracuse Realfood Coop for donating pumpkins to the Kid's Club,  Todd Hollow Glossary Link Compost for donating compost, The Spa at 500 for donating their tent, Larry Hoyt for music,  E.S.F. &  S.U. student volunteers who helped staff tables and breakdown and package the bulbs the night before and Syracuse Soapworks, Carol Watson's Greenhouse and Bluetree & Better Brittle for donating raffle prizes.

This year the Bulb Project facilitated the planting of 19,300 perennial bulbs throughout the city.
